About Blue Water Habitat for Humanity

Blue Water Habitat for Humanity is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God's love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Blue Water Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

Formed in 1990, Blue Water Habitat for Humanity serves the residents of St. Clair and Sanilac Counties. Following the principles laid out by Habitat for Humanity International, Blue Water Habitat for Humanity works with low income families to realize the dream of homeownership. New initiatives also provide assistance to exisiting low income homeowners through programs like A Brush With Kindness and Critical Home Repair.

Through the use of volunteer labor and donations of money and material; Blue Water Habitat for Humanity builds, rehabilitates or repairs homes long side the families that will purchase the home or already own the home. Families partnering with Blue Water Habitat for Humanity to prepare for homeownership or for repairs on their existing home, make a down payment (in homeowner situations), then make regular monthly mortgage or loan payments.  These mortgages and loans are financied by Blue Water Habitat for Humanity and are zero interest equivalent loans, making the loans more affordable for low income families. In addition to financial contributions, partner families invest many hours of their own volunteer labor, sweat equity, building, rehabilitating or repairing their home and the homes of others along side volunteers.

Blue Water Habitat for Humanity houses are sold to partner families with no profit and zero interest equivalent loans.  Repairs are financied with a no profit loan and financied with a zero interest loan.  All monthly mortgage and loan payments are used to build or repair more houses in our communities.  This revolving fund for humanity provides additional support to donor funds but also provides families with a hand up rather than a hand out.

Volunteers are utilized at all levels of operations at Blue Water Habitat for Humanity; from the board of directors to building or repairing homes.  We also have volunteer opportunities in our office and ReStore locations as well as on committees that process and care for our families.

Families partnering with Blue Water Habitat for Humanity must meet a three fold criteria process based on need, ability to pay and willingness to partner.

Those wishing to partner with Blue Water Habitat for Humanity to provide financial support may do so through cash donations, donation of material (related to home construction), gift in kind donations of labor, legacy gifts through a will or trust, and through donations made to our ReStore.
